MGAA Sponsored Outing

We are currently signing up MGAA members that are interested in joining us on a guided hike into the Waikamoi Preserve up on Haleakala. Waikamoi is a very beautiful place that is approximately 95%+ native Hawaiian rainforest. It is filled with Koa and O'hia trees, several species of ferns and other native plants, and tons of colorful native birds. The preserve is managed by The Nature Conservancy and access is restricted. If you are interested in signing up for one of the 2 hikes that we are offering you must read and agree to adhere to the information contained in the Prep Sheet (please read this document prior to signing up - a copy will also be sent out with your confirmation email).

If you are interested in seeing how Hawaii looked before man changed the landscape I'd highly recommend this hike. The natural beauty of this area can't be beat.

We have a total of 26 slots available (13 for each hike). If you are interested in signing up for one of our hikes please fill out the form at the end of this page. First come first served.

Roundtrip hike distance is less than 2 miles, but can take 3-5 hours. Going down is relatively easy, using caution on slippery tree roots as you hike through an experimental conifer plantation installed in 1946. The trail goes along a jeep road for over a mile then becomes single-file all the way down to bottom of boardwalk, with a platform for folks to sit. The multi-stepped boardwalk has no railings. Hike leaders will stop on the way at openings for all to catch up and look at available views. (Hike leaders are quite knowledgeable about Hawaiian natural history and this area, so please show consideration as they provide you interpretation.) When heading back up from this trail, its good to stop every 5 minutes to take a drink, catch ones breath, and allow the hikers to re-group. Hike at a safe and enjoyable pace getting back up the 700 ft. elevation incline to reach the parked vehicles.

We have arranged  for two hikes into the Waikamoi Preserve. Everyone meets in the Ace Pukalani parking lot at 8:30 a.m. We then carpool from there over to TNC's office to sign waivers, then on up to Hosmer Grove where we start the hike. The last time I did the hike we were back in Pukalani around 1:00 p.m. We have scheduled hikes for the following dates and once again it's first come first served. I will send out confirmation emails to the first 26 requesters who sign up and meet the membership requirement below. The form will allow you to select the options of being placed on the alternate date to the one you've chosen if space is available and to be wait-listed if both dates are filled and then someone cancels. Being placed on these lists will also be first come first served.

1st Hike: June 25, 2011 @ 8:30 a.m. (Saturday) - Completed
